KANZAKI Shihô

Kanzaki Shihô was born in 1942 in Shigaraki (Shiga Prefecture), a traditional centre for ceramics in Japan, though his family is not involved in the ceramics tradition. He studied law and then began a career at a large firm. In 1967, he saw an exhibition of Shigaraki ceramics from the 15th and 16th centuries. The pieces, fired with wood fires, had such an impact on him that he decided to become a ceramicist with the wish that he would be able create pieces of similar beauty.

In the following years he studied ceramics privately with Matsuyama Sugetoshi, a master of wood-fire kilns. At the same time he researched ancient firing techniques. He also studied the ruins of kilns from the 15th century.
