TOYOBA Seiya

Toyoba Seiya was born in Kani (Gifu Prefecture) in 1942, the son of an Japanese sword expert. He dreamed of becoming a sword sheath maker. But when, at the age of 18, he was invited to apprentice to Arakawa Toyozô – who in 1955 became a Living National Treasure for Shino ceramics – Toyoba decided to go into ceramics. He spent 14 years as Arakawa’s apprentice and assistant, working at the suigetsu kiln.

In 1974 he went out on his own. He built his kiln at the foot of the hill where Arakawa had his workshop. He called his workshop “Kiln Under the Kiln” (kama-shita-kama).
