"The smith’s tongs that I often use have a wonderful surface on the grips. Through the friction with my hands they have developed a shine which glows from within. I have never been able to produce such surfaces.
Two things interest me: the form – and, to me, that includes the space around the form -- and the surface, which comes into being through the interplay of material and working method.
For me it is all about simplicity. That applies to the forms that I smith and for the path that leads me there. I want to achieve the form in the easiest possible way. It can be very work-intensive. But I always keep my focus on using the simplest smithing and welding techniques to achieve my intended form." |
