ÔBA Yoshirô was born in Nakagawa (Nagano Prefecture) in 1940. After completing high school, he began working in Tokyo as a office worker. During that period it became clear to him that he wanted to work as a craftsman. In 1970 he changed jobs and started working for a company in Matsumoto which built hand-crafted wooden furniture.
In 1971, as part of his work, he met the lacquer master Okuda Tatsurô, one of the mentors of the meishitsu-kai (Clear Lacquer Group). Fascinated by Okuda and his work, Ôba began an apprenticeship in Okuda?s workshop in Wajima 1974. In 1980 he returned to Matsumoto and set up his own workshop. |
