AKAGI Akito

Akagi Akito was born in Konkô (Okayama Prefecture) in 1962. In 1981, after finishing secondary school, he moved to Tokyo to study philosophy. At the same time he began to practice the Way of Tea. In 1984 he took on a job as an editor for kateigahô, a popular women’s magazine. He wrote about art, handcrafts and design.

His meetings with lacquer masters Azuma Hideo and Kado Isaburô awakened his interest in art of lacquer. He decided to study it himself. In 1989 he moved with his family to Wajima and began an apprenticeship with the lacquer master Okamoto Susumu. In 1994 he went out on his own and founded a workshop.
